Our
Story
" York's last traditional hardware shop, the little shop that has everything, is a must visit. With over 15,000 product lines and a loyal customer base, their experienced team offers expert advice and service you won't find anywhere else."
~ B. Sixpence
Founded in 1935 on Bishopthorpe Road, Pextons began as a bicycle repair shop. Over the decades, it has remained proudly family-owned. Starting with the original Pexton family, ownership has passed through the Shearer, Hayes, and Ebdon families, and is now in the hands of the LePage family.
The shop originally occupied No. 11 Bishopthorpe Road and expanded into No. 13 around 25 years ago. Now, after 90 years, Pextons remains a recognisable and much-loved fixture on the high street.
In addition to its vast and sometimes bewildering range of products, the business has grown to offer a variety of traditional services — including key cutting (still the most affordable in the city), watch battery replacements, tool sharpening, and more.
Though still a small shop, nearly every square inch is filled with a useful tool, fixing, or gadget. Whether you're browsing for inspiration or in a hurry, our charming and knowledgeable staff are always ready to help. Pextons has long been known for offering clear, friendly advice that anyone can understand — it’s part of what keeps customers coming back.
